New Pureprofile research shows that 92 per cent of New Zealanders are planning to celebrate Christmas with the younger generation being more inclined to get festive (97% of 18-24 year olds versus 87% of 50-59 year olds). Our new research, based on a nationally representative sample of 1,529 adults, found that only 8% of respondents don’t celebrate any religious celebrations during the holidays.

The insights reveal what is appearing on Santa’s wish list. The top desired gifs (aside from money) are gift cards (30%) and chocolate & confectionary (25%). Younger people are more likely to want money and tech gifts compared to older people.

People are also planning to buy themselves some treats. In the technology category, the most popular gift respondents considered buying from themselves or someone else is a smartphone (17%), followed by a laptop, tablet and bluetooth speaker (all 12%).

People are getting a head start on their Christmas shopping, with the most popular starting time for being end of October (35%) and December (35%).
